Book Review: Nancy

Nancy is a boss.

Nancy is a comic I remember reading in the newspaper every single day when I was a kid. I haven’t read it in years, but I figured I’d give this a try. Olivia Jaimes is the first woman to write and illustrate this classic comic, which is suprirsing to me, and when she took over the role in 2018 she recieved a lot of backlash. Mostly because people are idiots and hate change it seems.

Whatever the case, this collection of Nancy comics was entirely delightful for me. Jaimes updates the character in light, new ways. She looks exactly the same. She still has the same sardonic and intelligent humor she always had, but now she references things that are of this century, and it makes it all better for it. I don’t relate to comics that are still making references daily to things that happened when I was in diapers. There’s nothing wrong with it, but if you’re trying to entice a broader range of people, things need to be updated to reflect the lives they live. Now Nancy has comments on smartphones and the internet, on the state of the world and how much things have changed and yet how little they’ve changed at all. It’s effortlessly charming but still with a bite that makes the strip snarky and witty. I am all for this new and improved Nancy.
