Book Review: The Way of the House Husband (Volume 1)

Holy shit this is awesome.

Honestly if it were not for the slightly repetitive nature of this volume, this would have been 5 stars. As it stands, I read this a day ago and I’ve already recommended it to 3 people, so it’s at 4.5 in my book.

What a fun, creative and SILLY premise this is. I adore it.

Tatsu used to be known as “The Immortal Dragon,” the most feared, legendary and badass Yakuza leader maybe ever. But for some reason he decides to leave it all behind and become a househusband. He still looks like a terrifying gangster, but now most of his fights involve him, his cat and a roomba rather than other gangs.

I love this. It’s so silly and weird and ridiculously sweet. Tatsu loves his wife and she’s working in a high powered job, so it only makes sense for him to be the one to stay at home and take care of their house and cat. I love the way the author/artist mixes stereotypes for Tatsu to look threatening and intense, but going all in on a bargain sale with a bunch of other stay at home moms. It’s delightful. One of his old followers stumbles across him and nearly ruins everything before realizing he wants to follow in Tatsu’s footsteps because he thinks if he’s a good househusband, he’ll be the best gangster ever. It’s misguided and Tatsu never states desire to go back to his old life, but the follower does his thing anyway.

I also REALLY love the way Tatsu is drawn. It makes him seem so much more intimidating and intense and the juxtaposition between how he is drawn and his personality is great. I also love how much he cares about his wife and her love of a silly anime. It’s adorbs. I hope Volume 2 gives us more backstory on their relationship because it’s hinted at lightly here, and I want more.

This is honestly just a real simple fun read and I cannot wait for the next one. I read it so quickly I might even pick it up again soon.
